AMRI hospital fire in Kolkata : We deeply mourn and express our grief over deaths

Friday 9 December 2011

89 persons died as a devastating fire ravaged a private city hospital, AMRI Hospital, Dhakuria, in the early hours of morning here on Friday. While the dead included both patients and  hospital staffs, post mortem report suggests majority of them were choked to death.
The fire broke out in the six storied building of the hospital at 3 am and within no time the smoke engulfed the entire building where 164 patients were housed.
Amidst frantic cries of helps from the patients in the hospital youths from the nearby locality joined in the rescue work pulling out patients and taking extraordinary risks before the fire fighters reached the spot.
There was seething anger among the relatives of the patients, some broke down in tears as news of the death of their loved ones came in and the rest continued frantic search for whereabouts of the patients running from hospital to hospital, scanning the list of the deceased.
Six persons, including two directors of the hospital, have been arrested in connection with the incident. The hospital will be sealed after rescue operations are completed, Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee said.
Announcing that the licence of the hospital stands cancelled she said that she was “sorry and shocked”. An FIR has been registered at the lake Police Station against the hospital authorities.
In all 28 fire tenders and three sky lifts were rushed into action as fire fighters tried to douse the fumes till late in the afternoon.
Most probably the fire started from the basement of the hospital where there was a pharmacy and store room containing inflammable articles, which was identified by Kolkata Municipality Corporation as a parking lot.
We are saddened with this news of the tragic loss of life caused by this massive fire. We, the postal employees of the Howrah Division joins in extending our heartfelt sympathy to the people who are affected by this tragic incident.

Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the dreadful disaster.

Exactly in the year March 25th 1911,that is a century back, one Triangle Garment Factory in New York, was gutted by fire wherein 146 work ers perished including 129 women workers among them. And that was the starting point of giving a cleanest working facility with the highest standard of Safety for the workers, free from any harassment and tension.
But what happened in India is most tragic inci dent of fire in a Hospital where more than 90 patients perished. What an irony it is to hap pen in a Hospital meant to save the lives and not to destroy the lives.Would we learn a les son from the this gruesome incident like the Americans,to provide a clean and safe work environment for all?
